Light years Ahead is an energy efficiency and renewable initiative for local government.

Commencing November 2017, Light Years Ahead will facilitate a range of energy saving upgrades across local government areas in Western Sydney including: LED lighting, HVAC systems, solar panels, insulation and new energy efficient appliances.

Street lighting makes up a large part of councils’ electricity bill. The Light Years Ahead program works with Western Sydney councils to replace inefficient street lights to the latest energy-saving LED lights.

Light Years Ahead will be coordinated through the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC) in partnership with Endeavour Energy and participant councils.

Light Years Ahead energy efficiency score card [needs to be updated]:

  • $19,000 lights changed to LEDs across Western Sydney (and counting);
  • $9.5 million in energy savings to date;
  • 126,538 tonne reduction in emissions (over 20-year life of the lights);
  • Four regional submissions on critical issues relating to the NSW Public Lighting Code and pricing determinations which resulted in:
  • Changes to Endeavour Energy maintenance charges
  • Establishment of a minimum level of service provision; and
  • New model for collaboration: Including quarterly forums with Endeavour
