The Cumberland Plain and surrounding subregions are unique Australian ecosystems, having existed on this continent for thousands of years.
In recent decades, it has been identified that a large portion of these subregions have been significantly disturbed or cleared, with approximately 10% of their original extent remaining.
This resulted in the fragmentation of these environments, affecting the health of the region, threatening native species and leading to a sense of disconnect from the land, especially among First Nations people.
WSROC, in partnership and with the support of the Department of Planning Housing and Infrastructure, has established two teams to address the growing issues in the area:
🟩 Caring for Country Council Grants – that is working with councils inside the CPCP area to develop and build up First Nations people and groups through non-competitive council grants.
🟩 CPCP Compliance Support – that provides support and resources to councils inside the CPCP area to increase awareness, engagement, education and compliance with legislation and policies, reducing and preventing instances of illegal vegetation clearing, specifically for native species.
