WSROC welcomes Coalition’s environment plan

Media Release August 8, 2013

The Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils has welcomed the Coalition’s promise of $15 million to protect endangered western Sydney bushland.

WSROC President Clr Tony Hadchiti said the generous offer was double that promised by Labor and showed that the Opposition recognised the urgency of the need to protect the last remnants of the region’s Cumberland Plain Woodlands.

“These woodlands are unique – there is nowhere else like them on earth,” he said. “However they are under constant threat from the expansion of housing and land development.

“The Coalition’s promise to establish a Cumberland Conservation Corridor in Western Sydney is an important first step in protecting our region’s unique environment.

“And it’s not just about the trees – green spaces are an essential part of any city and are important for maintaining healthy lifestyles and air quality.

“Our region is already targeted for major development – over 180,000 new dwellings over the next 20 years - and we need to act now to ensure that this growth is well managed and designed to minimise the impact on our natural environment as much as possible.

“We welcome the Coalition’s recognition of the importance of this issue and strongly support the formation of a designated Western Sydney Conservation Trust as a permanent land-holder for the corridor.

“The other positive part of the announcement is the commitment to funding 15 Green Army teams of ten young each to work on local conservation projects over the next four years, providing valuable employment opportunities for local young people. WSROC would be happy to work with the government of the day to maximise the local benefits of these conservation teams.”

“The Cumberland Conservation Corridor project will ensure that our precious bushland, and unique eco-systems are preserved for future generations to appreciate and enjoy,” he said.
