Energy mergers to cost Western Sydney jobs, March 28, 2012

Media Release March 28, 2012

The Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils has called on the State Government to immediately reveal the number of expected job losses in Western Sydney resulting from their proposed merger of the electricity distribution suppliers.

WSROC president Clr Alison McLaren said Mr O’Farrell’s recent comments that none of the jobs would be shed from regional NSW or Port Macquarie meant that the Western Sydney’s Huntingwood site near Blacktown would carry the brunt of the job cuts.

“As both the Premier, Mr O’Farrell and the Deputy Premier and Regional Infrastructure and Services Minister Mr Stoner have given public undertakings that no jobs will be lost from regional areas, we can only assume that Western Sydney will be the focus of the cuts,’ she said.

“Endeavour Energy employs almost 3000 employees (2925), many of whom are based at their Huntingwood head office near Blacktown.”

“This is an area which is desperately in need of more employment, not less, and comes at a time when Western Sydney families are already struggling to make ends meet.

“Blacktown LGA already has an unemployment level of 6.9 per cent - well above the Sydney average of 5.3 per cent.

“Furthermore, studies by the University of Western Sydney have already shown that Western Sydney is currently on track to suffer a net shortage of 200,000 jobs by 2020,” Clr McLaren said.

“Closing major facilities such as Endeavour Energy’s headquarters at Huntingwood which provides employment and support for many Western Sydney families will only exacerbate the problem.”

“WSROC calls on the State government to come clean about their plans for our workers and ensure that our families do not suffer as a result of these changes to the energy distribution network.”
