The Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC) have criticised a petition calling for the Powerhouse Museum to remain at Ultimo.

WSROC President Councillor Tony Hadchiti said suggestions that the integrity of the Powerhouse Museum as a key cultural institution would be undermined by a move to Parramatta are ridiculous.

“Western Sydney is not some culturally-barren outpost. Parramatta is the geographical centre of Sydney, and just half an hour down the road from Ultimo,” he said.

“This really shows the strong regional bias that still exists in the minds of some inner-city residents, and I challenge those who have signed the petition to come out and see what Western Sydney has to offer,” said Cllr Hadchiti.

“Suggestions that moving the Powerhouse to Parramatta would weaken its ‘undisputed skills’ and potentially damage exhibitions is, quite frankly, insulting to both the museum’s staff and the arts and cultural professionals of Western Sydney,” he said.

“Proposals that an annexed collection be housed at Parramatta, further embeds the idea that Western Sydney is a second-rate cultural destination, when in fact it is one of the most culturally rich regions in Australia,” said Cllr Hadchiti.

“If the Powerhouse were to open further satellite sites, we should be looking at places further afield such as Blacktown, Liverpool, Penrith or the Blue Mountains, all of which have well established arts cultures,” he said.

“The Powerhouse will move west thanks to the NSW Government, and we hope this is just the first of many steps reducing the arts funding divide between Sydney’s regions,” said Cllr Hadchiti.
