Mapped by community group, the Walking Volunteers, the walk winds through a varied landscape of protected Cumberland Plain Woodland, local rivers, public parks, heritage sites and some of Western Sydney’s most iconic urban landscapes.
The Walk is the result of combined efforts of community groups, land managers and governing bodies, and has resulted in new opportunities for community recreation, exploration, and revegetation.
Following today’s launch, the Walking Volunteers will commence a five-day trek of the full route, celebrating with local communities along the way.
President of the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC), Cr Barry Calvert, said “The scale of the Great West Walk is a testament to the power of collaboration.
“WSROC commends landholders including Blacktown, City of Parramatta and Penrith councils, NSW Parks and Wildlife Services, Parramatta Parkland Trust and Western Sydney Parkland Trust, who have turned lines on a map
into a fantastic community asset that will promote more active lifestyles and encourage us to explore what’s in our own backyard.
“I would especially like to thank the Walking Volunteers for their tireless work in mapping the route and providing ongoing support in bringing this project to life,” said Cr Calvert.
Other key participants who have supported the route’s development include NSW Architect, Department of Planning Industry and Environment, Western Sydney Local Health District, Western Sydney Diabetes, WSROC and NSW Office of Sport.
Cr Calvert said “The Great West Walk opens up new areas of Western Sydney for everyone to enjoy. I encourage the community to take advantage of this opportunity to explore the region on foot.
“There are plenty of surprises for locals and visitors to discover, in the unique, less-known landscapes of Western Sydney,” he said.
