WSROC welcomes Powerhouse site announcement

Media release, 11 April, 2016

Today’s announcement of a preferred site for the Parramatta Powerhouse has been welcomed by the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC).

WSROC President Cllr Tony Hadchiti said “We are pleased to see the Government’s plan to re-locate one of Sydney’s major cultural institutions to Western Sydney move into its next phase.”

“This relocation will be significant, not just because the Powerhouse Museum is such an iconic state institution, but because it is the first major cultural institution to be located in Western Sydney,” said Cllr Hadchiti.

“Almost half of Sydney’s population live west of Strathfield, and the move will make arts and cultural experiences more accessible for those living in the West, North and South,” he said.

“A Parramatta Powerhouse will be more accessible to residents of Western Sydney, particularly school children who are currently travelling as much as two hours for school excursions to Darling Harbour,” said Cllr Hadchiti.

“We also hope the relocation will help attract more funding for Western Sydney-focused cultural productions and events,” he said.

“WSROC is glad to see the NSW Government working closely with Parramatta City Council on this project, as continued collaboration will be the best way to ensure the new Powerhouse offers maximum benefits to the local community,” said Cllr Hadchiti.
