On 27 May, Western Sydney councils came together to plan and prioritise another year of regional collaboration on waste diversion, circular infrastructure and preventing waste in the environment.

Council staff from eight councils joined WSROC staff and representatives from the NSW Environment Protection Authority to review progress of the Western Sydney Regional Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2022-2027 and prioritise delivery of initiatives for 2026/2027.

WSROC’s key focus for the year ahead will see:

  • continued advocacy on the need for waste processing and disposal infrastructure capacity to support a rapidly increasing population in the region,
  • appropriate strategic planning to support waste infrastructure delivery,
  • combined efforts to promote waste avoidance and support community reuse and repair initiatives,
  • keeping environments free of litter and hazardous wastes,
  • advocacy on changing legislation and planning policy impacting councils’ ability to provide safe and efficient waste services to households.
