Diversity Fest 2015

Diversity Fest 2014 - Follow my lead dance performance. Diversity Fest 2014 - Follow my lead dance performance. University of Western Sydney

The University of Western Sydney (UWS) is calling on councils to sign up for Diversity Fest – an annual event celebrating the vibrant multi-culturalism of Greater Western Sydney.

Spanning eight campuses, Diversity Fest is a unique opportunity to gather alongside UWS staff and students to run an event, hold a forum, run a workshop, float an idea, or simply engage with people via on-campus market stalls.

This year Diversity Fest is happening between September 1 and 10, and is expected to draw thousands of staff, students and communities from the broader Western Sydney region.

One third of UWS students come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and one fifth were born overseas. Over 170 cultural groups are represented at UWS, in a unique educational and social environment that aims to serve the people of Greater Western Sydney and beyond.

UWS actively cultivates an atmosphere of inclusion, whether it be students with disabilities, students identifying as ATSI, GLBTIQ students, students from lower socio-economic backgrounds and international students.

Register here to get involved.

Dates and locations

As UWS is a multi-campus university, Diversity Fest takes place across the main campuses on different days. UWS invites councils to hold a stall or run a workshop/screening, event during lunchtime, 11am to 3pm, at the following campuses:

Campbelltown                 1 September

Hawkesbury                     2 September

Nirimba                             3 September

Penrith                              8 September

Parramatta                       9 September

Bankstown                       10 September

Program highlights include:

Aamer Rahman with the Bankstown Poetry Slam

Internationally acclaimed comedian, Aamer Rahman, is coming for three big shows at Penrith, Parramatta and Bankstown. Aamer will be joined by our students from the Bankstown Poetry Slam and other local artists.

Diversity Fest panel discussion

The panel discussion is an opportunity to prompt challenging discussions about what diversity means at our University, throughout Greater Western Sydney and across the nation. The panel will include University academics, students and artists, who will discuss issues of racism in a post-ISIS environment from a range of perspectives.

Diversity Fest edition of crUWSible, the UWS student newspaper

A special diversity-themed edition of the UWS student newspaper, crUWSible, is planned as part of Diversity Fest. Students are invited to submit news articles, observational pieces, artwork, videos, and poems.

Westies: Explore West

Fourth-year design students have been asked to respond to what it means to be a "Westie". An exhibition of their posters will run at UWS Gallery, Werrington North July 20-October 9.

If councils would like to hold a stall on campus, each will be supplied with a marque roof, table, chairs, display board and signage. The event is an opportunity to engage with UWS staff and students on each campus, gain feedback, and promote services and projects.

Diversity Fest is an initiative of the Student Representation unit, located within Student Support Services.
