Garage Sale Trail heads west in 2015

The annual Garage Sale Trail is moving West in 2015, with eight Western Sydney councils signing up for the event this month.

President of the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC) Cllr Tony Hadchiti said Garage Sale Trail is a fantastic opportunity for residents to declutter the home, make some quick cash and meet the neighbours.

“But most importantly, Garage Sale Trail carries an important message about reuse and recycling,” he said.

As a region Western Sydney is producing more waste than ever before. It is estimated that by 2021, Western Sydney will be generating over 1 million tonnes of waste per year - the equivalent of garbage trucks filled with waste queued back to back from Sydney to Brisbane.

Earlier this year WSROC launched its Western Sydney Regional Waste Strategy with the goal of diverting 70 per cent of the region’s waste from landfill by 2021.

“Western Sydney councils are working hard to prevent waste any way they can, and Garage Sale Trail is a fun, innovative way for residents to get involved,” said Cllr Hadchiti.

“Furniture, toys and exercise equipment are some of the most common items put on the kerb for council pick-up. Often these items are in perfect working order and it is a shame to see them go to landfill when they could be re-used or restored by a new owner,” he said.

“We hope Garage Sale Trail will encourage residents to stop and think about what they are throwing away, and question whether it could be repurposed, sold, or donated to a new owner,” said Cllr Hadchiti.

Garage Sale Trail is on Saturday October 24, with registrations open from August 10.
