Hawkesbury calls for responsible cafes

To help to reduce the use of disposable cups, Hawkesbury City Council has entered into an exciting new partnership with Hawkesbury Environmental Network (HEN) and the nationally recognised Responsible Cafes, which was featured on ABC TV’s ‘War on Waste’ series.

Over three billion takeaway cups are used in Australia every year, almost none of which are recycled. Disposable cups and lids can take thousands of years to break down in the environment, contributing to land and marine pollution and threatening wildlife.

This represents a major waste problem, with a significant carbon, water, paper, petroleum and chemical footprint. A great majority of disposable cups and lids end up in landfill or littered in the environment.

The Mayor of Hawkesbury, Councillor Mary Lyons-Buckett said “this waste is a great concern for all of us, and we can all do something about it”.

“I met several cafe owners recently who have signed up and I’m delighted that they want to get involved,” said Cr Lyons-Buckett.

“Council and HEN want to tackle the problem of disposable cups in the Hawkesbury with the support of local cafes and the Hawkesbury community.

“HEN volunteers have already visited 70 cafes to get them on board, which includes cafes in Windsor, Richmond, North Richmond, Kurmond, Kurrajong and Glossodia,” she said.

“The Responsible Cafes platform encourages cafes to sell discounted reusable cups and to also provide a discount to customers who bring a reusable cup for hot drinks.

“I know that, together, we can keep the Hawkesbury sustainable.”

As part of the Responsible Cafes program, Council will provide a limited number of FREE reusable cups to residents at the 2018 Hawkesbury Show on 20-22 April.  All you need to do is visit the Hawkesbury City Council tent at the Show and then sign a pledge to use the reusable cup when buying takeaway hot drinks.

“I want to acknowledge the local cafes who have already registered for their commitment to solving this waste and litter problem - we can all make a positive difference,” added the Mayor.
