Message from the President: Airport must focus on outcomes

WSROC President Cr Stephen Bali. WSROC President Cr Stephen Bali.

This month delivered the announcement that Western Sydney Airport Co. will be based in the Liverpool CBD. This is fantastic news for the City of Liverpool and the Western Sydney region.

It is critical that the company responsible for planning Western Sydney Airport is based in Western Sydney.

The move demonstrates investment in local skills, the local economy and will hopefully provide greater insights into the needs of our community.

While Western Sydney Airport offers significant opportunity for our region, there are still many aspects of the project that need to be addressed to achieve the best outcomes for Western Sydney.

First and foremost a jobs and procurement plan that will maximise employment opportunities for Western Sydney residents and economic investment in the region.

Second, a comprehensive, long term transport plan that includes current and future corridor preservation, costings road-based transport, freight and passenger rail.

Third, a solid noise abatement strategy that assures current and future residents will be adequately protected - wherever the flight paths fall.

Fourth, uncompromising protections for the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area to preserve the natural environment and the significant tourism economy it supports.

Fifth, investigations for a fuel line running to the precinct to prevent excess freight traffic on Western Sydney’s roads.

These are the measures necessary to ensure Western Sydney Airport provides the best possible outcomes for Western Sydney. Basing its operations in Liverpool is a great start, and we hope that employing local expertise will be the next step.  But for this airport to be a success, we need to get away from cliché announcements and focus on real projects to sustain a successful outcome.
