Message from the President: Financial year wrap up

WSROC President Cr Stephen Bali. WSROC President Cr Stephen Bali.

And so we begin a new financial year.

Reflecting on the last 12 months, it is astounding what WSROC and its councils have achieved together.

From urban heat mitigation to waste infrastructure planning, economic development, and fighting for a more transparent energy market, there are many areas in which Western Sydney councils aren’t just exceeding the jurisdiction of local government but driving the discussion.

In such an environment, local government’s increasing scope is exciting yet demanding, making it more critical than ever for councils to work together on projects of common interest.

One of WSROC’s most successful programs continues to be the Western Sydney Regional Waste Strategy, which delivered $3.5 million for Western Sydney initiatives in the last year alone.

In addition to its ongoing work promoting strategic waste planning and positive policy reform, the regional waste program has delivered a number of outstanding results on-the-ground including: the safe removal of 41 tonnes of asbestos waste from Western Sydney homes, reduction of roadside litter by 36 percent*, and the delivery 13 food waste avoidance classes to Western Sydney communities.

WSROC has also produced a number of joint initiatives including: animal holding facilities, procurement, public lighting, liveability and regional economic development. Initiatives which are improving outcomes for local government within the Western Sydney region and beyond.

I would like to thank all our partner councils for their contribution to these programs and look forward to another year of building stronger local governments.
