In partnership with Western Sydney University, WSROC’S 2020 Waste Not Design competition put the spotlight on young, local designers, inviting them to creatively explore new ways with waste.

The inaugural event drew 11 entries, competing for an iPad Pro, and the winner and runners-up were announced earlier this month at a presentation event attended by Dr Allison Gill, Western Sydney University Director of Design Program and Cllr Barry Calvert, WSROC President, at the WSROC offices in Blacktown.

The aim of the 2020 Waste Not Design competition was to engage with some of Western Sydney’s up and coming designers, to use their creative medium to extend the message more widely across Western Sydney.

Waste is a big issue for WSROC member councils. Australia is one of the top ten producers of waste per capita in the world. While the most effective way of reducing waste is to avoid creating it in the first place, this message often becomes lost in the daily routines and circumstances of everyday life.

WSROC President Barry Calvert said, “We are proud to partner with Western Sydney University on this project. The association between WSROC and Western Sydney University extends back to the establishment of the University, in the 1980’s.

“Our mutual interests are in the continuous advancement and pursuit of our region’s brightest future. I am pleased to say that there were some very high-quality entries that succeeded in encapsulating the ‘Waste Not’ message in a most vibrant and memorable way.”

The winning artworks will be shared with Western Sydney councils to be used in future campaigns aimed at waste reduction.
