WSROC’s regional waste team have been involved in the development of draft framework for the NSW Government’s proposed container deposit scheme (CDS) this month.

The NSW Government committed to introducing a cost-effective CDS in early 2015 and plans to have it up and running by mid-2017.

The scheme will incentivise container recycling by offering consumers a refund on redeemed containers. It is hoped that this will reduce the incidence of litter and contribute to an increase in recycling rates.

As part of the scheme’s development, the NSW EPA have commissioned an advisory committee and will be consulting with six key stakeholder groups to develop the scheme.

WSROC has been invited to participate in the Community and Local Government Working Group and has been proactively consulting with its member councils regarding what they believe would offer the best outcomes for both councils and their communities.
