WSROC backs calls for review of Badgerys Creek airport

Media Release April 16, 2013

The Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils has backed calls from NSW Unions and the business sector for a new Environmental Impact Statement to be prepared on the Badgerys Creek airport site.

WSROC President Tony Hadchiti said aircraft technology had changed significantly since the last EIS in 1997 and it was likely the noise impact of a proposed airport would be different to that previously determined.

“The Federal Government needs to talk to the people of Western Sydney as matter of urgency before they make any decision on a second airport,” he said.

“WSROC has already announced we will be consulting widely with our communities and residents to gauge their opinion and we need updated information on the real impacts of the airport – both environmental and social.

“The announcement by Unions NSW and the Western Sydney Business Chamber shows that attitudes in the region are changing from what they were almost two decades ago when the issue was last raised.

“Its time the Government took these changes into account.”

“The Greater Western Sydney Region is already home to 1.9 million people, from over 100 different cultures and nations who are educated and travel frequently, and in the next 20 years we expect our population to grow by another 1 million people.

“These people are going to need jobs and access to transport – and as WSROC has always argued - we need appropriate and effective infrastructure and investment to generate economic development ahead of this growth, not after.

“For this reason we urge the Government to consider the views of Western Sydney as a matter of priority before they make a decision on a second airport.”
