WSROC welcomes release of draft Metropolitan Strategy

Media Release March 20, 2013

The Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils has welcomed the release today of the NSW Government’s long-awaited review of the Metropolitan Strategy and called on the Government to work closely with local councils in achieving its goals.

WSROC President, Clr Tony Hadchiti, said the key details outlined in the high-level strategy, such as jobs and housing targets were challenging and would require all levels of Government to work together if they were to be achieved.

"This report shows that we have already underestimated the expected the population growth for Sydney, which has been increased from 5.3 million to 5.6 million over the next 20 years.

“This means it is even more critical that we are able to achieve the housing and jobs targets set out in the report so that we are able to cater for these additional people – as they arrive, not after.

Clr Hadchiti said he welcomed the Government’s plan to put almost half the new jobs – around 300,000 of the designated 625,000 in Western Sydney as an important first step in moving jobs closer to where people lived.

“This will greatly reduce commuting times and allow people more leisure time with their families, thereby improving their health and quality of life,” Clr Hadchiti said.

He also noted that the Government had increased housing targets to 545,000 new dwellings and urged the Government to maintain the policy of a 70-30 ratio of urban infill to greenfields sites.

“Sydney cannot afford any more urban sprawl,” he said. “Developing greenfields sites requires additional infrastructure and transport which our councils cannot afford to fund on our own,” he said.

“For this reason the Government needs to work closely with local councils to ensure the services and facilities are in place to meet the needs of these new populations as, and not after they arrive.”
