Premier needs to talk to the West on airport – WSROC

Media Release March 18, 2013

The President of the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils, Clr Tony Hadchiti, today issued an invitation to the Premier, Barry O’Farrell to work with local councils in talking to Western Sydney residents about a second airport at Badgery’s Creek.

“The Premier must seek the views of Western Sydney before ruling out a second airport at Badgery’s Creek,” Clr Hadchiti said.

“WSROC has already committed to undertaking a major review of community attitudes towards the airport and we invite the premier and the NSW Government to work with us on this project,” he said.

Clr Hadchiti noted that anecdotal evidence, including recent surveys, had suggested there is already significant support for Sydney’s second airport among the community, and that Badgery’s Creek may prove to be the optimum site.

“The key issues facing our region now and into the future are the urgent need for jobs, infrastructure and economic development.

“What we are hearing from our constituents is that they recognise that a second airport located at Badgery’s Creek would be a major catalyst to tackling these issues.
Clr Hadchiti urged the premier Barry O’Farrell not to rule out a second airport in the Sydney basin.

“The fact is that most of the population growth in NSW over the next 20 years will occur in Sydney – and the majority of that will be in Western Sydney. We are expecting 1 million extra people in our region alone over the next 20 years.

“These people want to have access to an airport and they want the jobs and economic opportunities that an airport will bring.

“Talking about building a second airport in Newcastle or Canberra does not make sense.

“Mr O’Farrell should listen the views of our Western Sydney residents and businesses before he makes any final decisions.

The WSROC Board voted at their last meeting to undertake detailed community consultation on a second airport at Badgery’s Creek if the Federal Government rules out a second airport at Wilton.

Clr Hadchiti said WSROC would be willing to work with the State Government in carrying out the research.

“Our plan provides the perfect opportunity for Mr O’Farrell to get an accurate and in-depth reading of our resident’s real views on a second airport at Badgery’s Creek and we would invite him and his Government to work with us on achieving this,” Clr Hadchiti said.
