WSROC applauds Federal Govt dam commitment

Media Release February 28, 2013

The Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils has warmly welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement to allocate $50 million to begin work on raising the wall of Warragamba dam.

WSROC Vice President Clr Tiffany Tree said the decision was a significant win for Western Sydney residents who will benefit from cheaper insurance premiums as a result.

“Residents and businesses along the Hawkesbury Nepean valley have been living under the shadow of a potential flood for decades and it is only due to luck that we have not suffered a catastrophic flood in that time,” she said.

“A flood of the size which hit Brisbane in early 2011 could potentially cause up to $8 billion in damages and this has been reflected in our residents’ insurance premiums.

“For many Western Sydney residents, the cost of insurance has simply been too high, so in the event of a flood they would lose everything without having the financial means to start again.

Clr Tree also applauded the announcement that the Federal government intended to work with the State Government to support their proposed flood mitigation review.

“This is a fantastic example of how all three tiers of Government can work together to achieve the best possible outcome for our residents,” she said.

“The State Government identified the issue in their Infrastructure NSW report and announced a review and the Federal Government has now come on board to support this urgent project.

“The impact of a major flood in the Hawkesbury Nepean valley has to potential to paralyse the NSW economy for at least six weeks so it is no wonder this issue is of national importance.

“WSROC and our member councils look forward to working closely with both the Federal and State Governments on this program to protect our residents and minimise the risk of a major flood – before it’s too late.”
