West to have its say on Badgery's Creek

Media Release February 21, 2013

The Board of the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Council’s has called for a major community consultation campaign to determine the views of Western Sydney residents towards building a second airport at Badgery’s Creek.

Speaking at the meeting tonight, President Tony Hadchiti said Western Sydney needed to have an important voice in the decision making process, as their residents would be the most affected.

“There is no doubt that the issue needs to be widely canvassed among the people who will be most affected by any decision regarding a second airport for Western Sydney,” Clr Hadchiti said.

“It may be that people will think that the potential economic and employment benefits outweigh the potential negatives of air and noise pollution.

Our region has a unique set of opportunities and challenges and it will be interesting see how residents will view the impact of an airport.

“A major infrastructure project of this size would directly create up to 40,000 jobs, and bring benefits to many more local businesses and industries.

“Job creation is essential for our region which already has some of the highest youth employment figures in Australia.

“In addition it will cut travel time for our residents who currently have to journey to Mascot to Kingsford Smith airport, and provide a major boost to our local import-export and retail businesses who rely heavily on freight.

“However there is no doubt that there will be some inconvenience from noise and associated air pollution for residents who live close to the airport.

“What is extraordinary is that we do not know exactly what those impacts will be given the huge advances in aviation technology,”

“At this stage everyone is still relying on reports which are 15-20 years out of date and it would be irresponsible to make an important decision like this based on out-of-date information.

“Its time that we hear the people who will be most affected by any plan for a second airport at Badgery’s Creek and that is the residents of Western Sydney. This consultation process will allow this to happen.”
