Cautious welcome for new casino college

Media Release February 8, 2013

The Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils has offered conditional approval of the announcement that James Packer plans to build a new hospitality training college in Penrith to provide staff for his Barangaroo hotel and casino complex.

”We welcome any new training and education initiatives in our region and Mr Packer’s decision to source his new staff from Western Sydney shows a real vote of confidence in the potential of our young people,” WSROC President Tony Hadchiti said.

“Hospitality is a major industry and employer and it is great that this new college will open a gateway for our kids to access these careers.

“Mr Packer’s decision to build in Penrith also represents a major investment for our region and we hope that having such a high-profile figure leading the way will encourage other major companies to move to Western Sydney.

“That said, Penrith is a very long way from Barangaroo and we hope that Mr Packer has given some though to how his staff will travel to and from work.

“Western Sydney residents already face long travel times in their daily commute, trains are overcrowded and the motorways are choked.

“In addition, many of these young staff will be working shifts, which means transport options may not be available at the times they need them. We would hope Mr Packer would consider putting on a designated 24 hour free bus service to enable these kids to get to and from work.

“It is also worth noting that gambling is a problem for some Western Sydney families and we would hope that the training courses include a serious and preventative approach to managing potential gambling issues.”
