West is ready for the election - WSROC

Media Release Jan 31, 2013

The Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils has welcomed the announcement of the date of the Federal election and looks forward to talking with both parties to ensure the needs of the region are met, WSROC president Tony Hadchiti said today.

“As everyone knows, the marginal seats of Western Sydney will be critical in determining who will win government,” Clr Hadchiti said. “We are very pleased that now have an agreed deadline to work towards and sufficient time to meet with both sides to discuss our issues,” he said.

Among the most important issues for Western Sydney residents were job creation, infrastructure, transport and housing, he said.

“The Greater Western Sydney area is a vibrant future-facing region which is home to around 1.9 million people and has an economy that generates $85 billion annually,” Clr Hadchiti said. “And we achieve all this despite years of inadequate investment in transport and infrastructure, and with a job deficit which now stands at almost 200,000.

“Furthermore, we expect the population to increase by another 1 million people over the next 20 years, and on current projections that will increase our jobs deficit to 300,000.

“Clearly there are serious issues in managing this growth which need to be addressed at all levels of Government and we are pleased that both sides of Federal politics have recognised the importance of our region.

“It is time that the voices of Western Sydney residents are heard and we look forward to working closely with all candidates to get our messages across,” Clr Hadchiti said.
