Health cuts a sick joke - WSROC

Media Release September 14, 2012

Plans to cut $3 billion from the health budget will effectively cripple the health of NSW for years to come, the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils said today.

WSROC President, Alison McLaren said the Government had lost sight of its core function – which was to provide health services and education to the people of NSW.

“It seems this Government can’t see beyond the next budget day,” Ms McLaren said.

“First we see education spending slashed, leaving schools and TAFE colleges struggling to teach, now our hospitals and vital health services are targeted.

“Clearly the Government is so focussed on the budget bottom line they have forgotten that their job is to run NSW for the benefit of the people – not the treasury mandarins.

“The health system cannot afford any more cuts – especially in Western Sydney. Already our services are stretched beyond the limit – with fewer hospital beds, longer lists for essential surgery and less GP services.

“Our most recent report, Critical Condition – a Comparative study of Health Services in Western Sydney which we released just two months ago shows that our region has 10 per cent fewer hospital beds per 100,000 people than the rest of Sydney, and our surgery waiting times are up to ten times longer in some cases.

“In addition to inadequate services we also have some of the highest levels of lifestyle-related illness, due mainly to poor diet and education.

“Our obesity rates are running at over 60%, and it is predicted the cost of managing diabetes alone is expected to rise to $8.6 billion by 2023. We also have the highest levels of smoking related illness, and health problems attributed to lack of exercise.

“Now the Government wants to cut funding even further.

“Clearly we need more investment in the health sector now to offset future costs but, as the Government is claiming it will not cut jobs, this can only mean that health programs and services will be targeted.

“This short sighted approach is going to leave our health system under resourced for decades and the current problems will compound.

“This government has lost sight of its role – they are elected to provide health and education services – but instead they are cutting essential services in order to protect poker machine tax rebates for clubs.

“The highest priority for any government has to be the welfare of its citizens. Any Government that thinks cutting health and education is the way to provide that, is delusional.

“The people of Western Sydney put their faith in an O’Farrell Government when it delivered an historic election result for the Liberals. Now that trust has been broken. Clearly the Government is taking our residents for granted. However, they do so at their own peril.

“You cannot play politics or budget games with people’s lives,” Ms McLaren said.
