Get the Balance Right, urges WSROC

Media Release September 25, 2013

President of the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils Ltd (WSROC), Clr Tony Hadchiti, has cautiously welcomed the Government’s decision to reconsider its proposed planning laws but has cautioned against going too far in the opposite direction.

“Most councils are relieved that some proposals which would have reduced their control over local planning may be removed,” Clr Hadchiti said.

“But we have to be careful that we don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater. We all have to be willing to step back and look at the longer term strategic picture.”

“The fact is, there will be 1.7 million extra people living in Sydney in the next twenty years and 1 million of those will be in Western Sydney.”

“The big question is where will they all live?”

“If every council resists change and opposes medium or higher density housing, the only alternative will be endless new housing estates and greater urban sprawl.”

“This will have enormous consequences for the whole of Sydney and the way we all live. It would cost billions more for extra transport infrastructure, putting extra pressure on already stretched resources.”

“It would mean greater distances and longer time in commuting and the greater economic, social and environmental costs that it imposes.”

“It would mean the loss of valuable green space and it would accelerate the on-going threat to Sydney’s threatened $1.5 billion agriculture industry. Some 40% of Sydney’s most productive agricultural land and 50% of its vegetable farms is in the designated north-west and south-west growth areas.”

“New housing estates on the urban fringes are part of the answer but they can only ever be a small part. Councils in all suburbs, not just western Sydney, must be willing to work with the State Government to seriously address the issues of urban renewal and consolidation,” Clr Hadchiti said.
